What happens at the stock exchange at night? While everything here appears to be at rest, in other parts of the world business activities are brisk. Stock prices are constantly in flux. The highs and lows of the stock market are represented artistically by the well-known Bull and Bear sculpture standing in front of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
The project Ariadne’s Thread draws a relationship between the symbolism of the sculpture and the mythological battle of Theseus and the Minotaur. Each day the artist reflected anew on this juxtaposition while chewing gum. Later the gum was installed as a thread between the mouths of the Bull and Bear sculpture.
Is the thread perhaps the trace evidence of a kiss?
Ariadne’s Thread, intended to guide us out of the labyrinth of the stock market, has neither a beginning nor an end. The two forces, in supposed opposition, are accomplices of a system that demands they are situated in perpetual battle with one another.
