In his 1988 book Origins of the Museum, Krzysztof Pomian defines semiophores as objects that have lost their function, however their meaning increase. Instead such objects are charged with socio-cultural meaning giving them an idealized quality, a symbolical value… “The more an object is invested with meaning the less its usefulness… and the greater its value .”

In his series Semiophores artist Mario Asef examines how semiphores are created within a visual arts practice. He develops methods for creating vessels of meaning in an effort to make legible the “function” of art and its symbolic mechanisms.
